ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is the use of thin, sterile needles being placed in specific acupoints around the body to create a therapeutic effect. It has this effect based on the release of beta-endorphins, serotonin and other neurotransmitters where the needles are placed. Acupuncture has been used for many years to help alleviate pain and other symptoms of body imbalances. It is very beneficial for arthritis management in older pets as it can relieve pain without the use of medications, but it has many uses.

Acupuncture can be used for:

  • Musculoskeletal Problems (arthritis, tendon/ligament injury, soreness)
  • Neurological Problems (IVDD, paralysis/weakness, incontinence)
  • Skin Conditions
  • Metabolic Conditions (Cushings disease, Diabetes, thyroid issues) GI Conditions (Diarrhea, IBD, constipation)
  • Respiratory Conditions
  • Auto-immune Disorders
  • Behavioral Problems or Cognitive Dysfunction
  • General Wellness

It is a very safe procedure and results can be seen as early as the same day of the appointment but some conditions may require several treatments to see the effects. On average, it is recommended to schedule 3-5 appointments 1-2 weeks apart for the best results. Sessions are usually around 30-45 minutes long but the initial appointment will be longer due to getting to know you and your pet. Pets generally tolerate acupuncture very well (even cats)! It is a relaxing procedure so once your pet is used to our team and the needles, they will typically fall asleep during the session. Multiple types of acupuncture are available and will be chosen based on your pet’s condition. Types can be combined and multiple types can be used in one session.

Types of acupuncture:

  • Dry needle: Using sterile needles inserted through skin
  • Electroacupuncture: Dry needles inserted and stimulated using an electrical current
  • Aquapuncture: Injecting vitamins/herbals/medications through skin into acupoint directly
  • Hemopuncture: Using hypodermic needle to release a few drops of blood from acupoint

It is helpful to have a medical diagnosis when beginning acupuncture. Dr. Carolina may request that X-rays or lab tests be performed in order to best treat your pet with acupuncture.
